The Theme for 2013

Alex (on the right) celebrates New Years Eve with us, leaving
just a few days later for Army training.
I hate mornings that start with tears. This morning, Rob's oldest son Alex left for ten weeks of Basic Training and Advanced Infantry Training in Oklahoma to prepare him for his Army career. Nearly 15 of us gathered at the recruiter's office to wish him farewell. Alex was a bundle of excitement and he could have been fooling us but I sure didn't see any signs of nervousness. He was just "ready to get out of here." I, too, felt excitement for this new journey. Worried? Of course. Sad? A little bit, to see him go. But I can't wait to see the transformation and watch this young man go forth and conquer.

Of course, a morning that starts with tears begs reflection. How many goals have I set and never accomplished? I think it's just a fact of life but even more than that, I'm really bad at reaching for my goals. I do the things that are easy. I grab the proverbial "low hanging fruit" if you will.

Last week, a friend of mine selected a word of the year. She chose Gratitude. I loved the idea and spent days considering what one word was the perfect word. Which word would be my focus in 2013? I finally settled on.....

Reach
verb.  attain - arrive - extend - gain - come - get - achieve

I could overthink this and come up with dozens of words to choose but Reach just seemed to fit.

"A goal without a plan is just a wish."

I'll share my journey with you over the next few months. 2013 is going to be a great year!
